, what have you done. >> reporter: party chairman michael steele was asking what the first thing the republicans might do if they win the house and senate. >> cutting the burdens due to taxes that are pushing down the ability of small businesses to grow, cutting down the spending of this administration. >> reporter: mr. obama defended his plan to let the bush administration tax cuts expire for people making more than $250,000 a year, which republican senator mitch mcconnell said would be quote, raising taxes on hundreds of thousands of small businesses and families across the country. other republicans said it would break mr. obama's own advice about not raising taxes in a recession. steele appealed for at least a temporary extension. >> so that in the middle of the recession, those who do have a direct hand in creating jobs have more incentive to go out in the marketplace and to do that. >> reporter: the white house says even a two-year extension would cost $100 million dollars, money the president says could be better spent elsewhere. >> these are the folks that are concerned

for the gop. here to give the party's blueprint to victory, michael steele is back. those numbers have to make you happy? >> they bring a smile to my face. what is more telling, i was a little amused earlier in the week when you had the chairman van holland say we've made 400,000 voter contacts and how unprecedented that was for the democrats. on the day' method that i got a report that said we had already made 7.8 million voter contacts itch the base is ready. they are fired up. our activists are red. our candidates are ready. this is going to be, i think, a very important election on a number of fronts. most especially for the party. i think you have seen, you and i have had this conversation, the pwaerlt back into the confidence of the american people by staying true to principles, articulating clearly what the principles are applying to the policies we saw in new jersey, virginia last year. i think is going to be a wave election. >> sean: how do you respond to the democrat strategy tack kick which is either to blame bush and say this going to be return of the bush era or the republican par

establishment? a party just doesn't wither away. dick army isn't going to be taking michael steele's job in the next five minutes. there has to be some sort of reckoning with the huge extent verk well moneyed republican establishment. what happens to them? did they just adapt or did they eventually have to get beaten into submission? >> i think beaten into submission. there is only 12 weeks between now and election day. these risks are huge right now. and i don't think it looks good. where they go in 2011, i don't know. >> will bunch, senior writer for the philadelphia daily news whose beat just got that much more interesting. >> absolutely. really appreciate it. good luck with the book tour. >> thanks. >> the slate of contestants is set for the first tuesday in november. first of all, wow! also what happens now? political number cruncher supreme nate silver will be here to talk to us next. >>> primary season save the best night for last if by best you mean most amazing. we have up to date results and what it all means. >>> there is a direct relationship between how excited i am about ne

, the rnc piped in immediately. michael steel, releasing this quote. "once again, president obama trotted out the same old warn-out reassurances on the economy but americans are still waiting for the promised recovery that never arrived." so what about what was said, what was talked about and the economy? bring in the panel. stephen hayes, senior writer for "weekly standard." judith miller from the "manhattan institute." and syndicated columnist charles krauthammer. charles? >> if that is what you get when a group of hand-pick ed members of an audience, imagine what you would have got with a random selection of audience that would have been more raucous. it clearly is not something that helped him. i was struck by the fact nothing new came out of it. but one statement is classic obama that reappears over and over again. he says my challenge is i'm thinking about the next generation, and there were a lot of folks out there who are thinking about the next election. this is the trophy he uses all the time. "the folks out there" the republicans, only about power, winning election and all that

[ talking over each other ] >> they don't like the republican in congress. >> this is a referendum on obama. he's the first democrat -- [ talking over each other ] >> obama had everything going for him. no democrats in -- he a mandate, in fewer than two years has squandered it and made himself into a joke. >> sean: they ran such a tight campaign. how is it they are so out of touch with the vacations? he couldn't get the gulf oil spill was a big deal and he needed to handle it in a more mature fashion. how come he doesn't get it the american people don't like spending. there's an out of touchness that i can't put my finger on. >> i think he had the economy go bad right before he came in. >> sean: i'm gonna throw this football at your head. >> i'm saying he kept a bunch of promises, health care. getting out of iraq. >> it didn't work, his solutions didn't work. stimulus didn't work. >> the prob

murkowski to accept her loss. rnc chairman michael steele saying "alaskans selected joe miller as the republican nominee for u.s. senate and he has the full support of the republican national committee. i'm confy den den dent that hen in november "meantime, many have asserted that miller's success in this race comes from the tea party movement and the tea party express we know for sure according to public records already contributed $600,000 to his campaign. by the way, former alaska governor sarah palin has also weighed in, calling murkowski's decision "a futile effort." kimberly? >> casey stegall, thank you. and joining me now is the man who defeated senator murkowskiion, alaska's gop senate nominee, joe miller. thanks for being with me this evening, mr. miller. before i get your reaction and i know you have one. i want to let everyone know that we did reach out to ms. murkowski and she declined an interview request. what do you think of senator murkowski's announcement? >> well, i think it is disappointing that she doesn't want to trust the will of the alaskan voter. what we

are they at the jim demints of the world? >> i think they would fall into that. you talk to republicans and michael steele frequently says that. yet, you know, if you talk to conservativ conservatives, basically, it's anyone in the washington, d.c. area, who has been working in politics for years and kind of responsible or a part in leadership for kind of the downfall of the republican party seeing democrats win in 2006 and barack obama win in 2008. they're just trying to clean house of all those guys. >> i want to go back to this idea. the bailouts that some of these guys ran against. does this send a message that look, if you give another dime to the banks, you're going to voted out, at least on the republican side? >> i think that's part of it. there is a lot of energy and kind of hard to tap into. what we're hearing here, despite the fact that a lot of these people are tea party candidates, their social issues are a strong part of the kind of gop mantra, the red meat for the party. yeah, you can talk about the bank bailouts and other stuff, but what's driving conversation today is what's been d

notes from how michael steele approached this. but going on camera saying a candidate isn't credible and just talking about how it took her two decades to pay off her college loans, well forgive her for not being rich like you, karl rove, but you want to talk about winning moderates and independents, that's not the way you go about it. it's really bizarre. >> that's not the only measure of credibility. i don't think karl rove is focusing exclusively on can she win. i think there's a reputational harm he is worried about when the republican party that has a mike castle who has been a serious thoughtful public servant is defeated by somebody whose views on issues seem to be do completely disparate and far afield from normal idea that's are tethered to fact and reason. i think that is what karl rove is scared about. there's a reputational hit the republican party will really suffer from if they embrace candidates like this. >> alex, are you concerned about this? >> no, i think it demonstrates a lot of energy in the republican party. this is an anti-establishment year, anti-washington ye

of the actually republican committee or its chairman michael steele who has his own 12-step program for the parties -- those 12 steps not to be confused actually with glenn beck's 12 principles that form the center of his knew marek initiative. there's also paul ryan's roadmap to the american future. his call to action. -- sorry, guys. was followed by his and his friend's book called to action "young guns." it calls for growth, opportunity, and commitment. it has made for some spectacular news watching this past year or two. thanks to this parties soul-searching it has lots and lots and lots of platforms and statements and men fess toes to choose from. this mess is just from the past year and a half alone. everybody needs to sign on. how does this translate? well, back in february senator john mccain said senate republicans were working on a ten-point election year agenda. we called hi off to see where ta ten-point agenda is or if it exists. they referred us to the minority leader mitch mcconnell. his office has not gotten back to us. they never do. senate republicans say they are t

something here. professor sabato, it just seems like it wasn't that long ago, right? that michael steele, ahead of the rnc, i mean this idea that we're going to win the house. i don't see that happening. boy, what a difference several months make. >> absolutely. look. the summer has been a disaster area for democrats. remember, they declared this recovery summer. and they believed it because i think many of their economic analysts in the administration told them that the economy really would begin to turn around visibly, that people would understand it, sense it, and that it would show up in november. well, here we are at labor day and it's obvious that the economy is in the doldrums. even if you have an uptick between now and november, i don't think people are going to believe it. >> >> laura: we're going to get into specific races in a minute. but, joe, let's say you are analyzing team obama right now. they just rolled out that recovery summer, obviously a huge disaster. we need a recovery from the recovery summer at this point. what do you tell them to do now? have you got the home st

.o.p. chairman michael steele said, quote: the clearly he needs to get control of the message. our white house correspondent mike emanuel is traveling with the president who is speaking here in new york at the united nations. you know, his base had said you have got to do a better sell job. i went to some of their sites today and it looks like they are pretty happy. >> yeah. today was a different setting. he was in a backyard in suburban virginia with 20 people who believe strongly in health care plan the difference this is making in their lives and their families it was a very personalized approach to health care. the president admitted quite candidly that he should have done a better job selling it up front, shep. >> shepard: i thought there was a sign. lots of democratic candidates are talking about health care none of them are. they lost control of the narrative. >> republicans are running on we are going to repeal health care first chance we get. democrats are recognizing from the polls that essentially they believe that jobs, the economy are bigger issues on the agenda for the american p

. >> republican party chairman michael steele offered this reaction, "there are no poll-tested lines or high profile speeches that can ensure the struggling families will get the jobs they need or pay the bills that are now past due." steele says americans are still waiting for the recovery that has never arrived. the president says it will take time. shep? >> shepard: mike emanuel live at the white house where today the president reiterated he is keeping all of the options on the table for dealing with iran. the president's comments came the day after the iranian leader mahmoud ahmadinejad demanded the united states recognize his nation is a big power. president ahmadinejad also issued a warning to those who would challenge iran. >> those who insist on having hostility with us kill the option of having a friendship with us in the future, which is unfortunate, because it's clear that the future belongs to iran. >> shepard: that interview with "associated press" in new york ahead of ahmadinejad's address tomorrow at the united nations. david lee miller outside the facility at the u.n. what do

in a while there's nothing to worry about? michael steele, the rnc chairman with a bit of an about-face. see if you can spot it. the issue is opening up capital and credit lines for small businesses. last week mr. steele claimed it was a good republican idea. >> republican leadership on the hill has offered time and time again, it will continue to do so until they take the majority in november when they can actually begin to act and put into place these policies that empower small businesses by helping them create jobs, by opening up capital in credit markets. >> of course that was last week when he liked credit lines for small businesses. now -- >> you have the president proposing a small business bill which is nothing more than t.a.r.p.-3 or mini-t.a.r.p. putting money into financial institutions on the assumption small businesses will go and take out credit lines. they don't need that. >> clearly small businesses only need republican lines of credit not democratic lines much of credit. the winner, news media in general, the tokyo rose limbaughs of this world in particular for omitting a f

something -- >> it's not a sure fire -- >> republicans do have a secret weapon. we're sending michael steele to guam for a couple weeks. >> the same argument was used on the virginia race last year, the new jersey, massachusetts race last year. what they found is all those resources, all that money didn't make up for the intensity gap for the angry independents. >> if labor day is monday and that's the curtain raiser on the stretch of it, when you say how do i want to look at the map, what is your question? >> oh, my gosh. it would be, who comes out to vote? it all comes down to that. you know, when your chart doesn't have senior voters, we know in midterm elections, 40% of the electorate are seniors and they've never been a good group for barack obama. >> they've been trending more and more republican. you can go across the country and see the ads. will it work? >> seniors today are not the seniors of 30 years ago. the democrats keep treating seniors like they're the roosevelt seniors. they're not, they're the reagan seniors. so they react to them much differently and they're trying to go b

national committee, would you welcome chairman michael steele? >> the work we have to do now is of such great importance. it revolves around candidates and ideas and issues, but at the end of the day, it is going to be people. it is. each one of you. and a little bit or the great amount that you do will be there on election day. the reason we're out here is to make sure that people are engaged and listening because we have heard a great cry from the american people. the cry is simply, enough. enough. at what point do you paint 13 trillion dollars of debt is too much? that one -- $1.3 trillion of deficit is too much? how much of a burden do we expect a baby born today to carry in their lifetime? by now it is about $55,000. that is what we're talking about. that is what this fight we are engaged in is about. let's get to work. let's get to work. >> you say you were tired of nitpicking and backbiting. >> let me be clear. i am tired of the backbiting and nitpicking on the right. i don't think it is going to spoil us unless we allow it to heat up on us and take control of our effo

.c. the republican governors association chairman quantified the republican party's michael steele problem. while mr. steele is beloved by everyone in cable news for obvious reasons, he is not particularly beloved by republican party donors. that is widely understood in political circles. before today we didn't really know exactly how much the republican party calculates it has cost them to keep mr. steele onboard as chairman. today he made it clear telling reporters, quote, we have to come up with about $10 million that normally would have been pushed into the governors races in various directions. mr. steele did not respond immediately to that accusation because naturally he is on a republican party funded trip to si saipan. honestly. your donations to the republican national committee at work.
